Spiritual Accompaniment (Direction) Course

This course will run from September 2024- May 2025

It will be offered online, a medium which we have found not only allows people from further afield in the UK and overseas to take part but also unexpectedly enhances certain aspects of course teaching and practice.

Spiritual Accompaniment/Direction in the Ignatian tradition is based on the assumption that God is present and active in our lives and that through reflection and prayer we can become more sensitive to this presence. Through discernment, and sometimes with the accompaniment of another person, we are invited to 'find God in all things’, to notice how God is drawing us in our everyday, concrete experiences and respond to the invitation of God.

Purpose of the course

This course is for people who wish to explore the skills and gifts of accompanying others on their spiritual journey. It draws its inspiration from the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and as such is founded in the Ignatian tradition.

As a broad based course it is expected that participants will find different uses for what they learn - for example, informal spiritual conversation, prayer guiding, general use in ministry/life, beginning to offer individual spiritual accompaniment and retreats. A significant part of the course will involve ongoing discernment for each person about whether, and in what ways, they are called to accompany others in faith.

The Course consists of Four Modules:

1. Developing a Beneficial Relationship (Supervision)
2. The Transforming Work of the Spirit (Discernment)
3. Standards of Practice (Codes of Behaviour)
4. Pastoral Applications

Applicants should have completed:

• Growth in Prayer and Reflective Living as offered by the ISC/ Epiphany Group OR the Full Spiritual Exercises, either in daily life or over 30 days
• The Spiritual Conversation Course as offered by the ISC / Epiphany Group

Comparable courses will be considered.

Finance

The suggested donation for this course is £805. There is a non refundable deposit of £100. Funds can be paid in stages over the duration of the course

Grants and financial Assistance: 

Those in need of financial support should contact the ISC as soon as possible, and at the latest by 26 July 2024, to allow time to apply for a grant for those eligible.*

* A grant towards this course may be available for UK and European residents who find our full offering difficult to afford. This is from a third party source. We will send you details when you apply and your application is approved. 

However we also recommend that you try and source financial assistance elsewhere if you need it, or speak to us about a bursary - although our funds are limited.
